Higher Hopes! is a 501©(3) non-profit organization that serves families with children enrolled in Early Head Start Child Care Partnership Programs in Metro-Detroit. We provide a bounty of food in nutritious, multiple-meal food kits. Our goal is to inspire independence, relieve food anxiety and encourage family meals together.
Higher Hopes! works to fulfill the ideals of its mission through monthly meal kits and holiday feast distributions at Labor Day and Thanksgiving, with our programs expanding every year! As an agency partner of Gleaners Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, Higher Hopes! utilizes the mobile pantry platform to distribute 35–45 lb meal kits every month to families at the Head Start facilities. This is in addition to the our current holiday events, wherein 1,000 kits with everything needed for a barbeque are provided before the Labor Day weekend, and 1,000 full Thanksgiving dinners are distributed to the families the week before the holiday. By providing all the ingredients necessary, low-income families are still able to take part in cooking traditions with their loved ones around the holidays. The most recent program Higher Hopes! has launched is to rescue food and hygiene products that would otherwise be destroyed and send them to Michigan’s food banks, where the much-needed products are distributed to those in need.
A new event for 2021, Higher Hopes! partnered with Famous Dave’s and Applebaum Family Philanthropy to provide 1,000 meal kits for the Labor Day holiday weekend. Pork, spices, sauce, sides, and watermelon provided all the makings of a BBQ to celebrate the end of the summer and the beginning of the school year.
Since 2014, Higher Hopes! has been providing 1,000 Detroit area families full Thanksgiving meals with our “1,000 Turkeys, 10,000 Smiles” program. The kits contain everything from the turkey to the sides and drinks and provide enough food to feed 12 to 16 people. Giving families the ability to celebrate the holidays with loved ones in their own home is at the core of the Higher Hopes! mission.
1,000 meal kits containing 35-45 lbs of fresh, nutritious foods are distributed every month to families who have children enrolled in Early Head Start Child Care Programs. The kits contain proteins such as chicken, pork, or beef; fresh, frozen, and canned fruit and vegetables; grains like pasta and cereal; milk, eggs, fruit juice and more! In spring of 2021, we were able to include a large chicken (The Big Chicken Event) to the kits as a special treat.
Starting in 2020, Higher Hopes! began purchasing or soliciting donations of food and hygiene products which would otherwise have been lost due to supply chain disruptions. In 2021, Higher Hopes! facilitated the donation of 77,940 bottles of Raw Sugar hand sanitizer, as well as 160,000 lbs of sweet potatoes. These rescued products were sent to Michigan’s food banks, which then distributed them to the state’s more than 3,000 shelters, soup kitchens, and food pantries. Higher Hopes! continues to take advantage of opportunities to bring essentials to the underserved people of Michigan with this program.
