WeatherGard Double-Hung Maintenance Guide
The chief motivation for WeatherGard’s commitment to producing stronger, heavier, commercial grade residential replacement windows is a desire to offer a product that lasts like a window should. There’s a sharp contrast between this approach, and that of our competitors, who sell temporary, disposable replacements. Our window isn’t meant to be replaced, it’s designed to be maintained. Here’s how:
CAUTION
- Do not lean out a window to clean exterior glass.
- Do not depend on screen for support. The screen is not designed to prevent you from falling.
- If in doubt, hire a licensed and insured professional window cleaning service.
If you have questions not addressed by the instructions below, please contact us. We rejoice at every opportunity to help customers properly care for their replacement windows—new or old.
Tilting the Bottom Sash Inward
- Be sure the window locking mechanism is in the unlocked position.
- Raise the window sash approximately 3 inches.
- Grasp each side of the sash and use your index finger to disengage tilt latches.
- Tilt the sash in to a convenient cleaning level.
- Clean the exterior surface (using a popular glass cleaner and soft cloth or paper towel) by supporting the sash with one hand and cleaning with the other.
- Return the sash to original position and be sure both tilt latches click into place.
Tilting the Top Sash Inward
- Tilt-in lower sash by following previous instructions.
- Support the lower sash by using a chair, step ladder, or some other stable support. Be sure to pad the support to prevent damage and be sure sash is supported by the sash frame. Do not support sash by resting the glass on the support.
- Pull upper sash down approximately three inches.
- Grasp each side of the sash and disengage tilt latches with index fingers.
- Slowly allow the sash to tilt-in.
- Clean the exterior surface (using a popular glass cleaner and soft cloth or paper towel) by supporting the sash with one hand and cleaning with the other.
- Return the upper sash to original position and be sure both tilt latches click into place. Return the lower sash to original position and be sure both tilt latches click into place.
Cleaning Tips
- Wash the frames and sashes with a soft cloth or a long-handled, soft-bristle brush.
- For common dirt and grime, a solution of mild dish-washing detergent and warm water is ideal.
- Rinse the window with a gentle spray of clean water.
- Do not subject the windows to high-pressure spray.
Common Stain-Removal Techniques
Notice: Do not use cleaners containing aggressive organic solvents as these can degrade the finish. Avoid chlorine bleach, liquid grease remover, nail polish remover, furniture polish and cleaners, and other strong soaps and detergents containing organic solvents.
A variety of widely available household cleaning chemicals are effective in cleaning problem stains on vinyl windows. In most cases, Fantastik®, Murphy’s Oil Soap®, Windex®, Lestoil®, or a simple mixture of 30% vinegar and 70% water will do the job.
